Last night, leaders from our Church Council gathered for an onboarding session in the fellowship hall at Pittman Park. The focus of this session was to discern who we are and who God is calling us to be as a church. It was an excellent time during which the Church Council had conversations about our church culture, our strengths, our areas of potential growth, and how can live into God’s call together. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing the fruit of last night’s conversations.
Here are a few things that the Church Council identified as central to our church’s culture and DNA:
Pittman Park is a causal, relaxed church, where it’s easy to engage and plug in. We are welcoming church that gathers people on Sundays for worship, but is also a place where the community gathers during the week. We are a church that is active and mission-oriented, both locally and globally. We are generous and support our community by providing assistance to those in need. We are a community of faith with deep generational roots, but still a place where all are welcomed. Pittman Park has a proud history of launching clergy into ministry and it’s a place where retired clergy find home. Our church is diverse, not only in it’s demographic makeup, but in diversity of thought.
All of these attributes help make Pittman Park a place where disciples are made and the world is transformed. I can’t wait to see where diving into our identity and our opportunities for growth lead us. What comes to your mind when you think about Pittman Park, about the unique parts of our culture? I think of Pittman Park as a haven where everyone is welcome. Everyone is loving and encouragingq. People are made to feel as part of a family We are all brothers and sisters. It is a place where you want to be.
Pittman Park, good gracious Mrs. Benny, Dale and Watter Gibson, Jennie, Billy and Donna Bradley, Karen lavender, Mrs. Smith, Kathy Kicklighter, Holly, Chip Bates, Michael Moore, My Sister in Christ Charolett Edwards, My Brother Gary Michaels, Pastor Brad, all my mission trip teams, my Emmaus brothers and sisters, the youth teams, Misson booth, Pee Pec, bible study family, my sister and Sundy School teacher Phillis Thompson and not last Brother Roger Doty the reason I send you this. I left Statesboro, Ga. in 2011 to a calling I thought I heard. My faith grew at my time at Pittman Park UMC. The spirit is Alive in that Sacturary if you are willing to receive it. Dr. Smith upon my sons Chas’s death told me that my home was the first time he had part in Pittman Park that will always speak volumes to my soul about the power of the spirit that in that place. When the Pittman Park Newsletter came to my email and Roger was in this video, I listen to the first 3 words and turned it off. It was time for work 5:00 am and breakfast was calling. I guess it was 2 weeks before God thought I was ready to listen. LOL As I listen that day Roger gave some important information to the normal person concerned about the finances of the church. Debt free I can slow down my giving LOL. Not the case, the last part about the fund that was set up with the extra money given to challenge the congregation to reach beyond the normal. This is who Pittman Park is. It challenges it people to go all out for God! Love You BT
