Praying and Preparing for What’s Ahead
Before diving into this week’s Pastor’s Corner, I want to take a moment to ask for your prayers. Hurricane Helene is on its way, and many of us have friends and family in its path. Let’s pray together for their safety as the storm makes landfall later tonight. Please be wise and cautious if you plan to travel or go out between now and Friday. Our first responders and linemen need clear roads to keep us all safe, so let’s do our part to support them. Finally, if you need help throughout the storm, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the church.
New Sermon Series: Earn, Save, Give, All You Can
This Sunday, we begin a practical new sermon series at Pittman Park UMC called “Earn, Save, Give, All You Can.” Inspired by John Wesley’s famous sermon “The Use of Money,” this series will focus on how we, as disciples of Jesus, can wisely and faithfully approach money. Wesley’s advice is simple yet powerful: “Having first gained all you can, and secondly saved all you can, then give all you can.”
I want to reassure you that this series isn’t about guilt or pressure. Instead, it’s about reshaping our understanding of money and its role in our spiritual journey. When we approach money from a faithful perspective, we open ourselves to blessings and, even more importantly, the opportunity to bless others.
At Pittman Park UMC, we don’t give to maintain buildings or balance budgets. We give because we believe in God’s mission—to share love, grace, and hope with the world. Our giving helps others experience God’s grace and salvation for themselves.
Commitment Sunday: October 20
I invite you to journey with us in this series and reflect on your finances. Mark your calendars for Commitment Sunday on October 20. On this special day, we will have the chance to worship God by collectively taking a step of faith with our money, asking God to guide and bless our commitments.
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we dive deeper into how we can earn, save, and give all we can, for the glory of God and the good of others!
God bless,
Jonathan Smith
