Each year, students with a connection to Pittman Park UMC are eligible for a scholarship to help them afford higher education. The award is called the Charles Black Memorial Scholarship, and it was established with love and prayer in the 1980s. The scholarship honors Charles Black, a beloved member of the Pittman Park youth group who was tragically killed in a car accident. He did not have the chance to pursue higher education himself, so his parents, Garland and Grace Black, created a legacy to help others.

The scholarship was created with the money the family had saved for Charles’ education. Over the years, Garland and Grace supplemented the fund with more contributions. In the 2010s, Charles’ younger brother Mark added a substantial amount to the fund from his parents’ estate so the scholarship fund could be invested more effectively.
